Here are some tips for maintaining your dry skin to keep it healthy and glowing:
- Take shorter showers and baths, and in cooler water. Hot water and prolonged exposure can strip skin of it's natural moisture.
- Don't wash your face more than twice daily.
- Hydrate yourself. Drink plenty of water.
- Pat skin dry after washing/bathing. Rubbing yourself with a towel can strip away valuable moisture and exacerbate dryness and itching.
- Apply moisturizers while skin is still damp.
- Don't scratch itchy spots. Apply more moisturizer to them instead.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can cause dehydration.
- Exfoliate dry, flaky skin regularly, but remember not to scrub. Scrubbing strips moisture and causes irritation.
- Use a humidifier, especially in the bedroom. Bedding can strip your skin of precious moisture, and a humidifier helps.
- Use gentle, moisturizing cleansers, and go light with them. It doesn't take much soap to get clean!
- Don't smoke. The toxins in cigarettes depletes the collagen in your skin. It also causes the blood vessels in the top layers of the skin to constrict, thus thickening and reducing the oxygen levels in the blood.
