Below are some helpful tips for those with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin to keep you looking healthy and decrease flare-ups:
- Maintain your skin's natural moisture. Dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to sun-damage, infections, immune responses, and irritation. Maintain natural moisture by drinking plenty of water every day.
- Layer your moisturizers. This helps seal in moisture and forms a nourishing and protective shield.
- Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol. All of these increase your core temperature and can cause your skin to become irritated. Caffeine and alcohol also dehydrate.
- Never scrub. This not only irritates your skin, it also strips the natural lipid barrier that protects your skin from bacteria and environmental pollutants. Avoid loofahs and hot water.
- Use fragrance-free detergents and use perfumes with caution. Use unscented liquid fabric softeners instead of dryer sheets.
- Sun protection is a daily must, even in Winter. Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 protection.
- Choose skin care products with naturally soothing ingredients such as chamomile, azulene, oats, grapeseed oil, aloe vera, allantoin, rose extract, and green tea. These ingredients help calm over-stimulated nerve endings that can cause skin irritation.
