About Clay Masks...

Clay has been used for centuries for its healing power and ability to draw toxins from the body. Even animals are instinctively drawn to it. Clays are natural silicates that not only draw out toxins, but cleanse, invigorate, and restore skin to a natural balance. Different clays have different properties, and we have carefully selected them for each mask.

You should not use clay masks more than once per week. To do so would be overly drying! Everyone's skin is different, and you may find you need to use them even less.

Directions

Mixing your mask is easy... Simply place your measured amount (usually 1/2 to 1 teaspoon) into a non-metal container (glass, ceramic, or wooden are best) and mix with small amount of your chosen liquid to form a thin paste. Let this sit for a couple of minutes to allow the mask to absorb the liquid. If it is too thick, add a little more liquid. Apply to face with fingertips and let dry for 10-20 minutes. Those with delicate or sensitive skin should leave on no more than 5-10 minutes.

What you will feel

As the mask dries, you will feel it pulling and tightening the skin. This is supposed to happen. After washing off the mask with warm water, you may note slight redness. This is also normal and will disappear. If an actual rash occurs, discontinue use of the mask immediately.

Liquids

The most common liquid to use with your mask is water, but there are other liquids you can use to add even more beneficial properties:

  • Milk - Removes dead skin cells and softens
  • Buttermilk - The same as regular milk, but the higher acidity makes it more astringent and good for acneic skin
  • Yogurt - Cools, softens, nourishes - great for sun-damaged skin
  • Avocado Puree - Very nutritious and fabulous for mature and/or sun-damaged skin
  • Fruit Puree - (such as strawberries) Provides natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) and lend an exfoliating effect. Use sunscreen after.
  • Cucumber Puree - Cools and tones
  • Honey - Additional nutrients, natural humectant
  • Floral Waters - Adds additional properties and are also aromatic. Example: Rose water and Melissa hydrosols are slightly astringent
  • Egg - Egg whites for additional drawing power in oily/acneic skin, and Egg Yolk for dry skin
  • Aloe Vera Juice - Cooling, soothing, and healing properties
